BT business Wi-Fi

Good Wi-Fi is now as important as the line coming into the building. BT gives you several ways to get it right, from the Wi-Fi built into the BT Business Smart Hub to Complete Wi-Fi Discs and cloud-managed Cisco Meraki access points.

In short: BT business Wi-Fi starts with the BT Business Smart Hub, plus free guest Wi-Fi kept separate from your business network. To reach every corner, add Complete Wi-Fi Discs or Complete Wi-Fi Plus (standard on Pro), both backed by a six-month guarantee for your main building. BT Business Ultra and BTnet use Cisco Meraki access points instead.

What BT business Wi-Fi includes as standard

Every BT Business Broadband package (Essential, Enhanced and Pro) comes with a BT Business Smart Hub, the router that broadcasts your office Wi-Fi. For a small office on one floor, the hub alone is often enough.

BT's business broadband products also include free guest Wi-Fi. It runs as a separate network from your business Wi-Fi, so visitors, customers and contractors can get online without being able to see your PCs, printers, file shares or card terminals. That separation matters for security, and it is one of the simplest ways to keep your business network clean.

On the Essential, Enhanced and Pro packages, BT's terms set out a few practical points about guest Wi-Fi that are worth knowing before you rely on it:

  • You need to switch guest Wi-Fi on, following BT's instructions. It is not live until you do.
  • It is limited to 13 guest users at a time on a BT hub, so it suits a waiting room or small shop rather than a busy cafĂ© or hotel.
  • Guests connect through the hub itself, not through Complete Wi-Fi Discs or Complete Wi-Fi Plus devices, so extending your business Wi-Fi does not extend guest coverage.
  • BT may block guest access to categories of harmful website, such as hacking, pornography, self-harm and weapons sites.

If the hub's signal doesn't reach far enough, or you have more people and devices than one hub can serve comfortably, BT has three ways to extend coverage: Complete Wi-Fi, Complete Wi-Fi Plus, and Cisco Meraki access points with BT Business Ultra and BTnet.

Complete Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Discs

Complete Wi-Fi is an optional add-on to BT Business Broadband that works with the BT Business Smart Hub 2. It uses small Wi-Fi Discs placed around the building that work with your hub to form a single network, so staff can move between rooms without dropping their connection. You can check the signal from each Disc in the BT Business App.

BT backs it with the Complete Wi-Fi Guarantee. The main points, in our own words:

  • The guarantee runs for six months from the date the service starts.
  • It covers the main building at your site, and only while your hub is connected to the internet. It does not cover outbuildings, other sites or faults with the broadband line itself.
  • If the signal is still poor after BT has run diagnostic tests, BT may send you up to five extra Wi-Fi Discs free of charge.
  • If extra Discs don't solve it, you can ask for a BT engineer to visit your site and help get the best performance.
  • If the Wi-Fi still doesn't work properly, you can cancel the Complete Wi-Fi add-on within the guarantee period, return the Discs and claim back up to six months of the add-on's charges. Your broadband carries on as normal.

Complete Wi-Fi suits offices, shops, surgeries and small venues where the hub's signal fades at the back of the building, on a second floor or behind thick walls.

Complete Wi-Fi Plus on BT Business Pro

Complete Wi-Fi Plus is the newer version, which works with the BT Business Smart Hub 3. It is a standard part of the Pro package and is also available as an add-on. It works in the same way, with Complete Wi-Fi Plus devices that extend coverage around the building, and BT may send up to five extra devices free of charge if the signal is still poor.

Its guarantee also lasts six months and covers the main building at your site (again, not broadband faults). What you can do if it fails depends on how you have it:

  • As an add-on, you can cancel Complete Wi-Fi Plus within the guarantee period and claim back up to six months of its charges, with no termination charges for the add-on.
  • On Pro, where it is part of the package, BT's terms let you end the broadband contract itself within the guarantee period without termination charges.

Pro also includes Wi-Fi Security Controls, which filter websites on individual devices, plus Prompt Care fault fixing and an Expert Set Up visit if you choose it when you order. Compare it with Essential and Enhanced on the packages page, and read about the filtering in BT business broadband security.

Cisco Meraki Wi-Fi with Ultra and BTnet

For businesses that want centrally managed Wi-Fi, BT uses Cisco Meraki access points, which are set up and monitored through the Meraki cloud dashboard.

  • BT Business Ultra comes with a Cisco Meraki router and next-generation firewall, and BT can supply up to three Meraki access points at no extra charge where its engineer finds they are needed. BT says each access point covers roughly a 10 to 15 metre radius, depending on layout and obstacles. Free guest Wi-Fi is included and kept separate from business Wi-Fi.
  • BTnet Wi-Fi is available with BTnet, BT's dedicated leased line, and offers up to five Meraki access points. It pairs naturally with BTnet Meraki, where a Meraki security appliance protects the connection.

Meraki-based Wi-Fi is a good fit when you want one dashboard showing who is connected and how the network is performing, or when the Wi-Fi sits behind a firewall that you also want managed in the cloud.

Frequently asked questions

Does BT business broadband come with Wi-Fi?

Yes. The Essential, Enhanced and Pro packages include a BT Business Smart Hub that provides office Wi-Fi, plus free guest Wi-Fi that runs separately from your business network. You can extend coverage with Complete Wi-Fi or Complete Wi-Fi Plus, which is standard on Pro.

What is BT Complete Wi-Fi?

Complete Wi-Fi is a BT add-on that uses Wi-Fi Discs around your building to extend the hub's signal into one seamless network. It comes with a six-month Complete Wi-Fi Guarantee covering the main building at your site, and BT may send up to five extra Discs free of charge if coverage is still weak.

What is the difference between Complete Wi-Fi and Complete Wi-Fi Plus?

Complete Wi-Fi uses Wi-Fi Discs with the BT Business Smart Hub 2 and is an add-on. Complete Wi-Fi Plus uses Complete Wi-Fi Plus devices with the Smart Hub 3, is standard on BT Business Pro and is also sold as an add-on. Both have a six-month guarantee covering the main building at your site.

Does the Complete Wi-Fi Guarantee cover outbuildings?

No. BT's Complete Wi-Fi and Complete Wi-Fi Plus guarantees cover only the main building at your site. They do not cover outbuildings, other sites or faults with the broadband line itself. For several buildings, Meraki access points or a wider wireless design may suit you better.

How many people can use BT guest Wi-Fi?

On the Essential, Enhanced and Pro packages, BT limits guest Wi-Fi to 13 users at a time on a BT hub, and guests connect through the hub rather than through Wi-Fi Discs. Guest Wi-Fi is separate from your business Wi-Fi, but you need to switch it on. Busier venues usually need Meraki access points or a dedicated guest Wi-Fi design.

How many Meraki access points come with BT Business Ultra?

BT Business Ultra includes up to three Cisco Meraki access points. BTnet Wi-Fi, available with BTnet leased lines, offers up to five.
