BT One Phone replacement options

BT One Phone, which combined a business's office phone system with its mobiles, has closed. Here are the BT services that replace it, and how to move without losing numbers.

In short: BT One Phone replacement options come from BT's current voice range, because BT has closed BT One Phone. The main choices are BT Cloud Voice with EE Business mobiles, Digital Voice for Business with the Webex Softphone, and Microsoft Teams Phone Mobile. Each keeps one business identity across mobile and desk, in a different way.

What happened to BT One Phone?

BT One Phone was a business mobile service that made mobiles behave like extensions of an office phone system, so each person's office number and mobile came together on one handset.

BT has closed BT One Phone, and it no longer appears in BT's range of business calling services. If you were a customer, check with BT what was agreed for your account, which numbers it held and whether any contract terms apply. We can help you work out what to ask, but only BT can confirm your account position.

The good news is that BT's current range covers what One Phone did, and in most cases more.

The main replacement options

OptionHow it replaces One PhoneBest for
BT Cloud Voice with EE Business mobilesEach user gets a business number on the BT Cloud Voice mobile and desktop apps, with desk phones where needed, plus hunt groups and call routing. EE Business provides the mobile service.Teams of five or more who want a full phone system
Digital Voice for BusinessThe Webex Softphone puts a business number on smartphones and computers, with shared call appearance across devices and hunt groups from Enhanced upwards.Smaller teams that want quick online set-up
Microsoft Teams Phone MobileYour mobile number works both on the phone and inside Microsoft Teams, on BT's mobile network. BT sets no minimum number of users.Businesses that already work in Teams

There is no single right answer. The best choice depends on whether your team works mainly from mobiles, whether you use Microsoft Teams, and how calls to the business need to be answered. Our BT business phone systems page compares the wider range.

BT Cloud Voice with EE Business mobiles

For most former One Phone customers with five or more users, this is the closest match. BT Cloud Voice gives each person a business number that rings on the mobile app, a computer and a desk phone if they have one, and calls out can show the business number rather than the mobile number. Hunt groups and an auto attendant make sure calls to the business are always answered.

EE Business supplies the mobile service itself, with SIM-only and handset options. Running both through one BT Business Partner keeps one point of contact.

The full detail on BT Cloud Voice is on our dedicated site, cloudvoice.cloud, including features and numbers and porting.

Digital Voice for Business and Teams Phone Mobile

Digital Voice for Business suits smaller teams. Essential gives each user a UK number, unlimited UK calls and the Webex Softphone on their own devices; Enhanced adds hunt groups and an auto attendant; Extra adds Webex meetings and call recording. BT says it can be live within minutes of ordering, with no engineer visit. BT also says it is separate from BT Cloud Voice, so choose one platform for the whole team.

Teams Phone Mobile suits businesses that already use Microsoft Teams. Each person's mobile number becomes their Teams number, so calls can be answered on the handset or in Teams on a computer. It needs suitable Microsoft licences, which our sister site explains on Microsoft Teams Phone. For larger Teams deployments, BT also offers Operator Connect and Direct Routing.

Keeping your numbers and planning the move

Numbers are the part to get right first. Mobile numbers and office numbers move in different ways:

  • Mobile (07) numbers stay with a mobile service. Moving to EE Business or keeping them where they are is a mobile decision, made alongside the phone system choice.
  • Office numbers beginning 01, 02 or 03 can usually move to the new BT service by porting or transfer.
  • Do not cancel anything until each number's destination is confirmed. Cancelling first can mean losing a number.
  1. List every user, the numbers they used on One Phone and how calls to the business were answered.
  2. Check your BT account position for the closed service.
  3. Choose the platform: BT Cloud Voice, Digital Voice for Business or Teams Phone Mobile.
  4. Check the internet connection at each site, because the new service depends on it.
  5. Order, set up apps and any desk phones, and design hunt groups and greetings.
  6. Move the numbers and test calls in and out before telling customers anything has changed.
